The Color Black

January 22, 2011

Black Clothes"Why do you always wear black?" my friend asked me this week. I laughed and explained to her that I simply feel the most comfortable when I'm wearing black. Believe me, I am not alone, that comfort is felt by myself and a huge percentage of architects, designers, and members of the design community out there. My client once arranged a meeting with a vendor I hadn't met and told him "she's blonde, tall, and she'll be wearing all black." I'm not that predictable (ask my husband), but as far as favorites for my fashion I certainly admit that I turn to black.

I quickly figured out after moving to New York 21 years ago that black was our city's color of choice you just can't go wrong with it. Every morning as I walk into my closet I am hit with a wall of black draping fabrics; it's a good architectural staple and it allows you to embellish however you want. It's the perfectly executed building shell and I get to throw and splash color around with my accessories. Of course this severe approach doesn't always work; opening my suitcase in Miami last week I was a little depressed finding my extreme choices for the tropical surroundings. Luckily, I had some good accessories and light sweaters to help brighten up my look. Next question: why do so many architects wear dark-rimmed glasses?
