red hot by Thelermont Hupton

Last week I had the pleasure of being a judge at the Cappellini design competition. Cappellini challenged Pratt students to design a signature Cappellini piece for the "Future of Cappellini". What an awesome challenge right? I mean these students get to design a piece for Cappellini!!!! Thats BIG! Its was exciting to see the designs and to interact with the students, their professors and with the other jurors. Everyone in the room shared a common passion for design and we spent four and a half hours talking with the students about their work and looking at their designs. There was an impressive selection of the work... some brilliant, some with potential, and some needed some time back at the drawing board. There were 2 pieces that I think really "hit the mark" which I was super impressed with but on the whole I thought that a lot of students needed to push the envelope a lot harder. This is our next generation of designers and designing now is probably harder than ever.
This piece called Painstaking Cabinet by the super talented firm Thelermont Hupton for me exemplifies pushing hard, being risque and creating a new era of design. Saying that I LOVE this piece is a complete understatement.
