Brighter Times: Votives by Tord Boontje

brighter times, tjayne1

After the recent events at my loft involving broken Christmas ornaments and the ensuing emotional toll, I have decided to only buy unbreakable decorations. I found these very durable metal candleholders at MOMA called "Bright Times" by Studio Tord Boontje. The designs are made from thin flat metal disks with cut out patterns that pop up with the pull of a finger to create a multi-dimensional snowflake shape. I purchased a silver set, but it also comes in gold and a range of colors such as blue, green, yellow and magenta. It is great for votives, but you can also fill them up with pine cones or something festive, or simply display them. And, they make great holiday gifts.

I appreciate both their ancient and modern qualities. I think they look good on their own but they also look good juxtaposed with antiques things. I enjoy the way they shimmer and reflect

As I mentioned before, never underestimate the power of a candle - it is significant that even with the advent of other forms of artificial light, candles have always maintained a presence. Their lively, flattering light will always invite and never go out of style.
