Are You Nuts?

"Are you nuts?" That is how one of my younger friends and clients described a selection in my new book, "The Finest Rooms in America." "You cannot possibly put that in your book!" she said.
I did not agree, and within the context of the other 50 rooms in the book, the space is question was an argument for my thesis that a fine room is not always an expensive one. It must have an object of focus, careful consideration of arrangement and attention to detail. A room does not have to be gilded to be fine.
Here is one from the book that belongs to Mary Cooper in New Orleans and serves as an entrance, dining room, and hyphen between her kitchen and living room spaces. The genius can be seen in her deft tinting of the walls and her gift for arranging everyday objects she meticulously collects. The whole was carefully achieved and not to be lightly dismissed. I hope my friend will come to see it that way as well.

Leigh McGowen commented:
I have had the pleasure of being in the company of Mary Cooper and Tomio Thomann and can assure you all that the room is as beautiful and welcoming off-camera as on. She has an uncanny ability that shines through in her decorating, gardening and entertaining.

Mary's house was featured in World of Interiors She has the holds the honor of having her kitchen on the cover. Like most rooms of true quality they are better in person--unlike rooms decorated largely for photography Since you have all been so polite and not called me crazy, I will post pictures of the Gardner Courtyard next month--I am sure you would rather not see any more of The Finest Rooms, at least for a bit. I think I have seen pictures of the house some place else. It is beautiful. The colors are amazing.
John J. Tackett commented:
A variety is always welcome. And I agree with the previous comment; I am sure it is a delightful space in reality, occupied by the hospitable and charming hostess.
David Beresford commented:
I am sure it comes across better in person! But I am very happy to see the photos and your comments.
