Amsterdam Schiphol to JFK New York

October 17, 2010

Amsterdam Schiphol

Each and every time I travel from Schiphol airport in the Netherlands to JFK in New York, I am struck by how totally depressing JFK is. For being one of the most happening cities in the world, New York certainly does not put down the best welcome mat. I have been to third world countries with more impressive airports. I know I'm being harsh and horrible but it's true!

But instead of harboring on the negative, I want to share the Holland Boulevard at Schiphol Airport which is teeming with avante garde, cutting edge design that not only promotes traditional Dutch cultural design, but mixes it with fresh contemporary and surprising twists.

While getting a bite to eat before our morning flight back to New York this summer, I felt uplifted while seating ourselves at this table that seemed to have been injected with steroids. It was a delightful "Alice in Wonderland" experience for me so I can only imagine that for my 4-foot-tall daughters Mia Soleil and Saskia Luna it must have been even more fun.

Come on JFK...you've got some of the best designers in the world right at your doorstep...step it up!

It is their duty to inorfm me that the rules are out of the ordinary. Also they have little signs on only one side of the table facing outward so only one or two people on THAT side of the table can see. They clearly do it on purpose so people lose their money and then they point out that they have the rules posted on the table, its straight up thievery and not a coincidence.

Hi! My name is Callie Zanandrie. I’m a Producer for HGTV’s new international design series. I came across your post about the Amsterdam airport and thought you might be able to introduce me to any American friends you may have in Amsterdam.

HGTV’s new international design series is looking for four homeowners who have moved to Amsterdam and have turned their house into a home. The show will focus on exploring the overall design of the home as well as the lifestyle and culture of the city. In each episode, the host will explore four homes looking for great design ideas and highlighting the value-added elements within each space. From interior design to the lifestyle and culture of the area, the homeowners will give viewers a first hand look of what it’s like to live overseas.

We’re looking for American Expats as well as second homeowners who have a stunning space, an outgoing personality and who want to share their new life with their friends and neighbors back in the States.

The deadline for all applicants is May 9th however the earlier you can get your photos and application in, the better. If you have any friends, etc. in the Amsterdam area that you think might be interested please feel free to forward my contact information.

The whole airport is a delight, but I was blown away to see a library in the middle of the airport!

I agree. Schiphol is a fabulous airport!

We loved the Bubbles Lounge. They have terrific sushi! A great place to relax and enjoy a nice meal while waiting for your flight.
