Packages of Candy: Inspiration for Interior Design

For some mysterious reason, I have had a fascination with packaging, especially that of old fashioned and more modest products. The packaging of candy falls in this category. It often catches my eye because of its bright color and graphic design which, as we all know, is usually simplified to attract the notice of children.

When I was in London this past week, I saw this rack of candy in a shop. I think it is a perfect example of what I mean.

Just after seeing this display, I went to have tea at Comptoir Libanais. Obviously, another designer was also taken by the idea of candy packaging because it served as the design motif for this charming café. Here they combine the patterns from Turkish candy packages with the lively illustration of a beautiful woman. Her image also turns up on the store's awning, as a mural in the seating area, as well as on the menu cover and labels used on the store's products.

I appreciate how the candy motifs are enlarged and repeated on the furniture and counters, and how they play out against the black and white cube pattern on the floor. I particularly like the graphic way the red metal chairs stand out against the floor tile; I find it all very sweet.
