A Crew Called Keith

February 24, 2009

Let’s hear it for progress! I went up with architect Joan to meet with contractor Mitch and his whole crew, Keith. No they do not have one collective name, nor do they all share one common name. His crew is made up of one man, Keith. Although it hasn’t contributed much to the progress of the house, it does make remembering names a whole lot easier.

But there was progress. All the metal studs are up inside, and the window frames (not doors) were delivered and stacked. Mitch assures me the inches of rust collected on all the steel is not a problem (faux rust?). At least I don’t have to worry about the house looking too new. With the non-landscaped landscaping and rusted windows it could be mistaken for a tear down. Brokeback Manor may immediately acquire the "been here for hundreds of years, handed down from generation to generation, seen better days" look of old homes. With careful propping, like a well positioned horse and carriage, I could take some faded sepia photographs and demonstrate that this was the first flat roof home in America. Look how avant-garde, how ahead of it’s time it was.

Think horse-and-carriage, not Volkswagon.

Although move-in day might be months away, it’s not too early to start thinking about, and saving up for, house warming gifts. (Note plural) In case you’re in a bind as to what to buy me, I thought I might suggest a few things:

  • One year of mortgage payments
  • Deed on the lot next to me to guarantee my privacy in the future
  • 2 car garage with apartment on top
  • New car for said garage with apartment on top
  • One year of maid service

For my less "well-to-do" friends:

  • Steel wool and cans of Rustoleum
  • Outdoor plants

Here are pictures of the interior progress:

I know it all seems very slow, but great to see the studs up and to peek inside the house keeping my fingers crossed for you - count me in for 2 cans of the rustoleum! love ghislaine
