No Time for Modesty

March 17, 2010

With each visit to “The Manor” (abbreviated from Brokeback Manor and just a wee bit more pretentious) I get more excited. I do believe it worthy of an architectural prize. Even if it’s only the Ms. Biggs Award for Residential Architectural Excellence, it will surely win something. It is the house I’ve always wanted to live in and who knows, someday I might actually be able to do so. I never thought of living with my contractor, but if the move in date and construction overlap, so be it. Hope contractor Mitch can cook and that his cooking skills are faster than his building skills or there will be a lot of extremely late dinners.

As you can see, almost all the windows are in. When I say “in” I mean clamped in place, not secured and sealed. Unless Mitch is trying to establish a personal style of window installation, these will be replaced. Even the narrow slots in the front of the house have been glazed and look great, if I say so myself. These were quite the controversy in the design of the house. Joan fought me as I tried to convince her that they were unnecessary and should be eliminated. Okay, so I was wrong! There’s a first time for everything.

Another issue at hand is the Calcutta Gold marble on the wall. I ordered them early on in the job and now that Mitch has started to put them up I am having reservations. Maybe it’s because I’m used to seeing a raw construction site instead of an elegant marble wall. Maybe I was wrong to order them in the first place, maybe they’re fine and I am just worrying unnecessarily. Joan is coming up this Friday. Let’s see what she has to say.

Found this site by accident while searching for copper fascia! I have a 70's era contemporary that i am renovating and was excited to see someone is using copper fascia. A beautiful material however I am compelled to stamp an organic detail into the sheets rather than leaving flat. Anyone have any ideas of motif for the 50's-70's or must minimalism dictate lack of adornment?
