Decision Day

September 2, 2009

I drove up to my house to photograph the momentous progress that has taken place. Please don’t expect anything too extreme like glass in the windows or a fireplace, but I do have a copper fascia that looks great. Thank you, Joan, for convincing me to go without certain necessities like food or clothing in order to have it.

We have a new dilemma: stucco color. I like it dark, but cousin Lynn says absolutely no, Joan is not really sure and being the totally secure person that I am, I’m vacillating. I have narrowed the color of the steel to either black or a dark, dark red. One more trip this week and then Thursday is “D” (as in decision) day. The tally from the polls weighs in heavily toward black. Black is certainly safe, but do I want to be so safe? A deep red would give it a certain distinction, like maybe a designer was living there. Decisions, decisions, decisions…and Obama thinks he has pressure with his job!

Finished or not, the house is really beginning to look like someone could live there one day. When that day will come is anyone’s guess, but when I show the current pictures, people always react with an “oh it’s really far along.” Of course these people don’t know how long we have been working and probably assume we broke ground this year.

From top: Biggy surveying new copper fascia; slotted window from the outside; slotted window from the inside; sample of red steel. All photos by Paul Siskin.

I had peerrdroed my copy from Amazon.com so I received it as soon as it was published. I wonder if this means the first run has sold out and the publisher is going to make a second printing?Stephanie, you might make some calls to various brick and mortar bookstores if the online sources are all out. Someone is likely to still have a copy on the shelf or could have one transferred from another store.

Any idea why Dead and Buried doesn't appaer to be available in Canada? I preordered from Amazon.ca and they tell me it is unavailable and will be sent to me when it is in stock. The other big online bookstore in Canada doesn't even list it.Strange the publisher is based in the UK, so I would have guessed that release would have been simultaneous in Canada, NZ, Aus, etc. Could you try getting an independent to order it for you, or just ordering from amazon.com?

I don't think red is a good idea. A natural color would probably be best.

so to be specific about the light, creamy gray for the stucco, it is Benjamin Moore 1485, Brushed aluminum... use it with Benjamin Moore 1267, Dark ruby for the red! selena@mackayrosenberg.com

No to the red- what is with you and red...use it on your bookcases in the entrance if you must. You will hate yourself if you use it on the outside. The gray color looks great- thanks for asking me- should i be insulted!

The copper fascia was worth the sacrifices. It is stunning. I would take a chance and not play it safe on the steel. I think deep red for the steel would dk. charcoal stucco.

Dark red - warm not cool (no burgundy, cherry) rust. Putty colored stucco make it warm too(exterior plaster). make it a steel trowel finish. Pick up some cream accents somewhere. Then your hard landscape materials could go to slate, or concrete with stain or integral color on the warm side. Is the roof copper or just the fascia? What is the roofing material? or can you see roof from ground? You've got to at least think of some of these other things as you make your decisions. What do you want to do on the inside and how much of the exterior will be visible from the rooms?

I would go with a sage green stucco and the deep deep red almost burgandy steel or gray steel.

Dark, dark red. Go on, be a devil! Slightly less glare when viewed from the inside out, and engineering-pure from the outside. Dark stucco too - it will always look lighter under full sun than in a little test sample; and it will fade off a little over time. A patinated copper roof might look too heavy over a lighter wall.

A dark, dark red for the steel and a light creamy gray for the stucco...it will look great with the copper now and as it ages...and it will complement any green that grows around it...

Another vote for Pam Durkin's scheme. Classic, crisp, will really highlight the copper as it patinas!

I would do light grey with burgundy red for the steel. BTW Biggs still looks beautiful!

I totally agree with Pam Durkin's suggestion. By the way, your dog matches your dirt, I barely saw him in that first picture.

A dark grey would look great with black and a lighter grey would be beautiful with red. Couldn't see a lighter grey with red. Biggie looks great.

off-white stucco with dark red steel, don't know why but kinda like it, minimalistic with clean lines.

The copper is turning dark(red)brown and later into green with a "dash" of blue. Keeping the final copper color in mind I would go for a black-blue for the steel and a cream-white for the stucco

another vote for a lighter stucco- med gray at darkest. dark exteriors on homes feel very monolithic, and not entirely residential, imho. (i know- 'cuz a total stranger's opinion really matters, right? but what the heck, your tweet said you were polling).

i'd investigate something light..the combo of white, black and copper is really great. Add your crazy accent color right a the front door column area - great way to bring punch without the worry of changing the whole house when you get tired of it.

dark grey stucco and blackened steel..think about the copper turning into green - would it flow with deep red or look forced?? in any event, it's absolutely gorgeous! bravo! your dog looks right at home too.

Perhaps I've spent too much time working with Italian design which may affect my view! For me, go with black stucco, black gloss steel trim and let the interior shine! Understated!

I'm with you, Paul--keep the stucco dark. As for the steel, I say keep it natural or go with black.
