The Lloyd Hotel

August 16, 2009

Lloyd Hotel Amsterdam

A couple of months ago, I went to visit the High Line (fantastic, by the way). I decided to round off my little design outing with a look at the brand new The Standard Hotel (brilliantly amazing, too).  I proceeded to go to the front desk, ask for a manager, and politely tell him how interested I was in seeing the bedrooms. Never hurts to ask, right?  A charming and handsome young Austrian man took my mother, my friend Karen, and I for a tour of about four bedrooms–all with slightly different layouts and views.

When I was in Amsterdam, I went to lunch at the Lloyd Hotel, designed by the MVRDV. I thought I would give it another go and ask to see the rooms. Yet again, a lovely young person (this time a woman) showed us around this insanely bizarre and wonderful hotel. I could go on for a while, but, if my readers are anything like me, eye candy is all we really need after a long day of work. I will spare you chapters and chapters about this fascinating hotel and show you some specific photos of one of the bedrooms that really stuck in my brain.

I have to say I don’t really remember the beds, but what struck me when I walked into the suite was a turquoise contraption at the end of the room. Walking toward it, one notices it’s made out of fiberglass and behind it is actually the en-suite bathroom all moulded together. The tub works its way into the shower and the shower into the sink. It’s kind of like a giant blue room divider, and is the work of  Atelier van Lieshout. This hotel really pushes the boundries of design, and, although I have to say that I was not 100 percent convinced I would like to be a guest, I can tell you I was 100 percent delighted at the risks that were taken to make this place incredibly unique.

I stayed at the Lloyd Hotel several times. I have stayed in this room with the big blue green bathroom and I tell you it is one of the most unique and pleasant stays I have had in any hotel. There are far more to the hotel than these fibreglass contraptions, but they consistently rate as some of their best selling points. I go to travel to other places, and by extension, stay in hotels, to get out of my comfort zone, to experience something new. The Lloyd Hotel is something new and convincing, far more exciting than staying in some branded luxury hotel (where you are, unsurprisingly, amazed by the quality of linen). Good design makes you think about your world and how you interact with it, perhaps sometimes enhancing your activities, or sometimes making you realise other ways of doing your routines. Also a note about the colour of this object: it is in your face, but pleasantly so. I say down to the naughties' ambition for a symphony of beiges.

I think the most interesting thing about all of this is that it is taking the more expected hotel bathroom and putting it on it's head - this may not be the answer to a luxury hotel bathroom but I love that the design "rethinks" the bathroom concept.

change can be good in many ways but for sure it is not good it can be ok for transient hotel or a lowewr budget hotel....... not of a comfort hotel...

Thanks for the comments everyone - as I said in my blog " I was not 100% convinced" either so I appreciate the feedback. I think the design of the bathroom is very interesting but I thought that perhaps the feeling of luxury that one would expect from a hotel room might be missed in this room. Its definitely not for everyone and would not be my first choice for a night from home. But I am intrigued and for that reason I want to share things like this. If we all loved the same things it would be a pretty boring world. I will continue to blog about things that personally interest me. I don't expect everyone to have the same opinion or be on the same page as I am. So to all those open minded readers who follow my blog I thank you for you comments - good,bad.. (but lets leave out the ugly). Design just gets better with mature level headed dialogue. Lets just leave it at that :)

bubba's right when design bloggers stop sucking-up to anything euro and start to research good design in places we least expect then maybe we will see some good design journalism.

I would rather sleep on a park bench than have this in my room.

Sorry, but new for new's sake is not always good. If this was at a Motel 6 rather than high end property you would be complaining it reminds you of a prison or a bus terminal.
