Totems

October 11, 2009

I have been scouting for totems after we decided we needed a sculptural element in a nook of an entry. Totems immediately came to mind, and I found some really interesting things. I don’t think my client will like any of these, but I do, so I wanted to share them.

Shown here are some pieces from John Dahlsen, who is an environmental artist and contemporary painter. He finds discarded objects on the Australian coastline and turns it into art. I wonder if he really found all those flip flops. What is it about Australians not being able to keep on the shoes?!

The last image is the work of the artist Joseph Conforti’s raku sculptures and I remember seeing these in a store in Soho a couple of years ago - they are really really gorgeous.

I love totems and think they are another way to add interest to any interior. I am currentley working on upcycling glass totems and using a strip of LED lights just to have even more fun.
