Little Building Cafe

January 17, 2010

As I might have mentioned, I am big fan of the Annie Coggan’s blog Chairs and Buildings. I spotted these images on her blog and had to find out more. So here’s the story in a nutshell from a design point of view.

This super hip little cafe called Little Building Cafe in Starksville, Mississippi has a heart and does a lot more than serve good food. The cafe is deeply anchored in the concept of putting local first and foremost: food is sourced from a 100 mile region, the cafe is situated in downtown area and thus avoids travel by car, and the cherry on the top is that the cafe was renovated using sustainable design principles and local craftsmen.

The cups, plates, and bowls are from local thrift stores and, my favorite in the cafe, the chairs were picked up from local thrift store most of them needing some TLC. The resulting chairs are quirky little characters that I can’t get out of my mind.

This Little building has a big big heart. It’s the space where people gather for public events and promote and energize all kinds of creative folks in Starksville. Makes me want to open one in my ‘hood!

Enjoy these photographs by Rinnie Allen.

Great design. Terrible cafe. It failed miserably and with good reason.

Great design. Poor management. Too bad this place was oversighted in this small town bc of the weird owner. They only had maybe 10 menu items, and when you would order, they'd be like, "oh, we're out of that." Then you'd order once more, and they'd say it again. So basically, they only had two menu items a day if you were lucky. Sad times. It could have been a great place had the designer not been the one handling the business. Some people should stick to one thing.
