Swiss Living

August 23, 2009

There is no better way to genuinely get a feel for a country than by being able to spend time at a local’s house–this is true in true no matter what country you visit. When we were in Zurich, staying with my cousin Pieter and lovely Leonie and their two children Marie and Phillip, we had an amazing experience.

After a wonderful day swimming in the lake and picnicing, my cousins took us to the house of Leonie’s cousin Nora, her husband Martin, and their five adorable blonde kids. After about a 15-minute drive from Zurich up into the mountains, we arrived at their spectacular house. The minute we pulled into the driveway I laid my eyes on their house, a wooden A-frame house with lush vegetation, with ridiculous views of the hilly countryside. It all seemed too Swiss and perfect to be true!

We were greeted inside by Nora, whom I felt like I knew already–you know, just one of those good connections. We had a wonderful barbecue with lots of sausages, lamb, chicken, delicious salads, and local, chilled white wine, chatting while the children played.

The reason I want to share all of this is because for me, there is nothing more exciting than catching glimpses of how people live in not only America but also in different countries.

Nora and Martin have created a beautiful home for themselves and their children just a stone’s throw away from the city center. This earthy wooden house on the outside was crisp, clean, white, happy, and modern on the inside and fit the family like a glove.

Enjoy the rest of these beautiful pictures, all taken by my husband, Jaime. Keep in mind, this is real life–no styling or cleaning up for the shots–just real down right Swiss living at its best.
