Zuiderzee Museum

A couple of months ago, when I was in Holland visiting my family, my husband and I took a trip to the Zuiderzee Museum. Jaime, my husband, had seen posters in Amsterdam advertising the museum’s sixtieth anniversary with a comprehensive event showing the new course for the museum. We were blown away by this beautiful fishing village which has been immaculately preserved to show how life might have been hundreds of years ago.

What really made this visit for us is that this museum also has a exhibition that shows off the work of a large number of renowned dutch artists and designers. Among them are Studio Job, Atelier van Lieshout, Piet Oudolf and Royal Tichelaar.

One of my favorite pieces was a pavillion created by Atelier Van Lieshout that is in the shape of a human  intestinal system and female reproductive organs. It is huge and you can actually move through the space.  It sports doors, windows, and custom cabinetry and furniture, all made out of white fiberglass. The outside, too, is made of of fiberglass and is bright yellow with the ovaries being pink. I was told that you could sign up and actually spend the night in it. It’s located at the end of a jetty and has absolutely spectacular views of the Zuiderzee.
