Boxing Day

Today is December 26–Boxing Day for some of you (if you happen to be English, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, or from a British Commonwealth) this may mean something. Growing up in South Africa, we celebrated Boxing Day and I had always believed that this day originated from parachuted boxes being dropped from planes on the English after the war (which war exactly I was thinking of, I am not sure). It turns out I can’t find any information to confirm this theory, but I feel better knowing that nobody seems to have a clear idea regarding the origins of this day. Most likely the name came from boxes of gifts being given to tradespeople and servants by the merchant class, the day after Christmas.
What does all this have to do with an interior design blog one may ask? Well, here’s how it all connects. If someone were to send me a box with something in it, here’s what I wish I would find when I opened the box: the Periodic Table by Council Design. Using a proprietary process, a massive block of wood is coated with a brilliant layer of silver, resulting in a piece whose stunning surface does nothing to hide the individuality and character of the wood beneath.
