Fabricteria Maki

January 4, 2010

If I were given the following design challenge, "create an installation using inspiration from the French can-can," my first call would be to Maki Yamamoto of Fabricteria Maki. I would suggest a collaboration between the two of us. Who else do you go to in the world of interiors if you are after this kind of sexy laying and ruffling of sheer fabrics? There is a very special exhuberance in her work that is hard to ignore and the first time I ever notice her work was in the fantastic displays at ABC Carpet and Home.

Maki’s boutique creates gorgeous custom fabric couture ranging from wall panels and pillows to curtains. She is surely not one to shy away from color or texture and  I loved that on her website she states that she is inspired by "life, energy, nature, sex and passion."

She has been a busy lady this year and has managed to make a total of 148 feet of custom drapery for the Vdara hotel lobby in Las Vegas and Mauboussin boutique on Madison Avenue in New York, as well as create custom pillows for the Chanel Boutique in Shanghai.
