My Little Green Book

May 3, 2010

Vané Broussard, my senior designer, has been working with me for four years. (Thanks for that, Vané! You are awesome!). For Christmas she gave me a little green book called "Designers I met and like." I am supposed to fill it with names of designers I have met and liked. I am choosing to ignore the "met and," so, for me, this is about inputting the names of designers I like. Because I am far too passionate a person (especially when it comes to design), I am going to go even further and re-title the book "Designers that Rock!" "Like" is just not worth writing about.

Here are the designers I go crazy for:

Hella Jongerius - because I love just about every single thing she does. I love her because she is quirky and I just get the way she thinks and designs.

Patricia Urquiola - because she has an amazing way of designing and I instantly like everything she does.

Jaime Hayon - a.) he’s so damn cute, and b.) he really is the most talented designer there is.

Marc Newson - because I had a mad crush on him when I was in college and he was a nobody. I even put a picture of him on my wall in 1989. He is pure brilliance.

Patrick Jouin - because I met him and I heard him speak about a month ago. Anyone who doesn’t fall in love with his passion for design and talent is simply crazy.

India Mahdavi - because she is just plain brilliant.

Piet Boon - because I have just discovered why I think this Dutchman is kind of great.

Matali Crasset - because she is the most uninhibited designer I can think of. She designs from pure instinct. I dont know what planet she is from, but I want to go there.

P.S. I know I am going to look back at this list and think "Damn, I forgot ______."

P.P.S. Let me know who your favorite designers are, too!

I'm glad the Q&A brought out some of the is this degsin? questions and framing. I was listening to the topics and project descriptions of the lecture thinking to myself how does this relate at all to the degsin training I had in the early 90 s at CMU?! I don't get it at all seems like a bunch of ethereal mumbo-jumbo. Interestingly, through the Q&A discussion it really started to gel that the process of social innovation degsin or degsining behavior rather than form , it's not that different from the degsin processes we studies for product degsin . market research or educating yourself on a topic area as a common language or reference framework, ideation of exploring that framework for what is possible, divergent thinking for exploring what are the possibilities of solutions, and convergent thinking of evaluating and putting value to those possibilities Taking it a step further, this degsin approach cycles through the process in iterations once the degsin' part is done and out in the world. I guess this relates to the point made that Transformation degsin is never completed. Society and behavior as a material is quite a mental stretch, but I guess there's something to it. It's hard to argue with the results. That's what I got from the lecture.
