Design for a Living World
I missed the show Design for a Living World organized by The Nature Conservancy at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York, which was co-curated by graphic designer Abbott Miller and Ellen Lupton. So instead I draw inspiration from watching these incredible videos. Each tells a wonderful story of creative genius mixed with indigenous materials plants or animals and local people in 10 exotic destinations worldwide. This is all about opening one’s mind to the endless possibilities that the world has to offer, and looking beyond your own back yard. The featured designers and places include Yves Behar/Costa Rica; Stephen Burks/Australia; Hella Jongerius/Mexico; Maya Lin/Maine; Christien Meindertsma/Idaho; Isaac Mizrahi/Alaska; Abbott Miller/Bolivia; Ted Muehling/Micronesia; Kate Spade/Bolivia; and Ezri Tarazi/China.
It’s hard for me to pick a favorite because they are all fascinating but I am going to say start with Hella Jongerius just simply because she is beyond brilliant.
