Oh, What A Day
July 11, 2008

Robin Day said "To always buy new is a great pity.  If you make the right choice in the first place you can grow to love things".

Very wise words from Robin Day (1915) the British furniture designer who transformed the world of British design by experimenting with new materials to make price conscious furniture.  I think that most of us perceive things very differently today.  So many people feel ready to start over from scratch when they finally buy their dream house and all their "college" furniture goes in the trash.  I am as guilty as anyone else out there and have to admit that I would not be too happy living with the furniture I picked off the street when I was 21 and new in New York City.  But  I think that peoples attitudes are changing again since we are all become so much more conscious about waste.

Now, if I had picked up this Robin Day chair when I was 21 I would still be sitting in it today!

I could not agree more. We are getting more aware of the value of recycling. And a chair as beautiful in design as this one, one can grow to love with it.

Another reason why interior designers need to encourage their clients to buy pieces (furniture, carpets, art objects) that they love and will continue to appreciate over the years. There are many fine artisans (ex. 100percentblast.org) who work with interior designers to help make the interiors special.
