Show & Tell Time
November 4, 2009

Show & Tell time—finally. First, let’s talk about the front door lighting. Joan and I are in disagreement about which to use. My vote goes for the ones from Remains Lighting. Although not antique, they do have some age and therefore some patina. I think the scale and shape are perfect. (I’m ignoring the comment from Yamira that they look like the light fixtures at White Castle).

Joan on the other hand wants to use these from D’Interieurs. They are very stylish, but just a little “dernier cri.” They are too light weight, more suitable for indoors. I took the issue to my cousin Lennie, arbiter of taste and style. She whole heartedly agreed with me, sorry Joan.

Second on my list is the highly important fireplace sconce placement. Probably influenced by Laura Bohn, my first inclination was to cluster the pair and place them to one side. “Oh, no!” said Joan Chan. This time cousin Lennie agreed with her so I am giving it a second thought. As much as I would like to be absolutely sure about everything, I’m not. The architecture of the house is so symmetrical that I thought I would throw it off somewhat. Of course this will affect the placement of my art…oh yes, I forgot I don’t really have any. It’s probably a good thing I don’t have a collection. I have a problem with names and it would always be so embarrassing to never remember the name of the artists when people asked me. “Yes this is by my favorite artist, old what’s-his-name.”

Now I don’t want to show off, but I couldn’t help photographing the super-deluxe septic system I’m so proud of. I’ve always said, “invest your money in the septic system, you will never regret it.” Contractor Mitch must have known this as he knew just where to splurge. Only hope that the neighbors don’t think I’m one of those showy new-money types.

I say go with laura bohn's styling of placing the sconces together. Your septic is stunning. Well worth the money indeed

I was imagining something a little more "bauhaus" in feel for the outdoor fixtures... your house is streamlined and modern, no ornamentation.

i actually like the fixtures from white castle better than the lights from remains...

Either way, just remember to use CFLs. They'll help recoup Money Pit money. :-)

I love the fixtures from Remains Lighting. They do make the house look very aristocratic! Not White Castle-ish at all, but very Castle-ish! I love foward to reading your blogs every week and see the progress of your house.

I personally like the white castle look depending on the door. I'm a even kind of girl so scones on each side of fireplace.
