Cecilie Manz isn’t a sociologist. She just occasionally acts like one. While conceiving a collection of outdoor furniture, she observed how couples and groups, sinking into comfortable seating, would tuck up their legs, leaning in to listen. Her conclusion? “Sitting lower pulls you into a familiar embrace,” she explains. “It felt natural to lower the whole setting—even a little bit makes a difference.” That research culminated in Atmosphere, Cecilie Manz Studio’s mix-and-match series for Gloster. The sofas, chaise longues, and ottoman’s seat height is just 15 inches, versus the standard 18. Slim powder-coated aluminum frames bend into welcoming curves, solid teak slabs are generously sized, and upholstered panels and cushions come in 14 weather-resistant Sunbrella fabrics. There are also dining tables with coordinating chairs or benches.
