Foster + Partners Designs New Double-Decker for London

The new design features zero-emission technology.

A classic English icon is receiving an update for the 21st century.

British architecture giant Foster + Partners, in collaboration with Aston Martin and Capoco Design, recently took home the grand prize in the Transport for London Competition to design a new Routemaster double-decker bus for the capital city.

Modern efficiency was central to the team’s design as initial concept stages saw several weeks of research on issues including environmental impact, passenger accessibility and safety, and greater driving facility. Additionally, the team canvassed the city seeking opinions from local residents, passengers, and drivers to ensure greater positive impact.

“London’s buses are so much a part of the essence of this city--functionally, symbolically and geographically,” stated Lord Norman Foster. “Our design seeks to combine contemporary innovation with timelessness. Like the original Routemaster--which was ahead of its time and consequently endured--a new bus for London should establish a whole new travel experience that espouses 21st century aspirations, while celebrating the memory and the experience of the original.”

Outfitted to combat environmental challenges, the new bus is zero emissions ready. The atrium-style upper deck offers passengers enhanced views of the city while the glazed roof, outfitted with solar cells, generates power and assists with internal cabin temperature control. The lower deck features a warm living-room-style setting with wooden floors and reconstituted leather seating.

The new design also re-introduces a rear open access platform, and will offer a side entry for physically challenged riders and families with small children.
