In London, a giant crystal snowflake illuminates holiday shoppers in the posh Knightsbridge section of the city. Designed by lighting designer and Hall of Fame honoree Ingo Maurer, the 16-foot ornament was turned on last night and is sponsored by crystal manufacturer Swarovski and the Knightsbridge business group.

The first large-scale Christmas decoration unveiled in the area, the snowflake is installed between the Harvey Nicols and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Maurer also designed a smaller snowflake ornament, now on sale at department stores including Harvey Nichols and Harrods. With each purchase, a portion of the proceeds will go to UNICEF.

"I have always been fascinated by the light bulb because it is the perfect meeting of industry and poetry. The bulb is my inspiration" says Maurer on his muse.

The snowflake will be on view until January 5.
