The city of a hundred spires has another beacon. The Dox Centre for Contemporary Art opened in Prague last month as the Czech capital’s first independent institution focused on national and international contemporary art, architecture, and design. (Dox derives from the Greek “doxa,” or opinion, and also refers to the area’s docks.) Ivan Kroupa Architects has combined the center’s complex of 19th-century industrial buildings with new structures, one of which houses the Designshop Dox, a 3,200-square-foot space by Qubus Design that’s filled to the brim with glassware, porcelain, lighting, furniture, and jewelry by local designers. The lion’s share of unusual objects is by Qubus cofounder, 32-year-old Maxim Velèovský.
