Mary Heilmann grew up roaming Los Angeles beaches, then went north to prowl San Francisco's beatnik clubs in the 1950's and '60's. Today she lives and paints in Manhattan, yet her easy-breezy past rears its carefree head in "Mary Heilmann: To Be Someone," at New York's New Museum of Contemporary Art October 22 through January 26.

The exhibition brings together more than 60 artworks from the past 40 years of Heilmann's career, all evincing her trademark vibrant painterly strokes, full of the rhythm cited in her pop-music inspirations--from the Sex Pistols to K.D. Lang.

The retrospective occupies half the building; the remaining galleries are filled with "Live Forever: Elizabeth Peyton," paintings, drawings, and prints by the fellow New Yorker and prolific Heilmann protégé.
