International Architecture Award Winners Announced

Winning firms include Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Foster + Partners, and Christian de Portzamparc.

A total of 114 new projects around the world have been singled out by a jury of American architects for the 2008 International Architecture Awards. Presented by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and Metropolitan Arts Press, and co-presented by the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the annual awards program is the only global awards program in architecture of its kind. It recognizes designs of new skyscrapers, corporate buildings, institutions, arts facilities, airports, private homes, industrial structures, and urban planning.

Talent is gushing out of Great Britain, which received a total of 14 awards, the highest number for one country. China and the U.S. tied with 10 awards each, Germany took home eight, and the Netherlands six. Canada, Japan, and Mexico earned five, and Austria, France and Portugal four awards each.



American firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill landed a total of nine awards -- the highest number for a firm. British firm Foster + Partners won four and French firm Christian de Portzamparc won three.

Winning projects include Christian de Portzamparc's Cidade da Musica in Rio de Janerio; Foster + Partners' Millau Viaduct; and the CCTV Television Headquarters in Beijing by Rem Koolhaus and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture.
