Herzog & de Meuron and Anish Kapoor to Collaborate on New York Tower

The building will be located in the city's TriBeCa district at the intersection of Leonard and Church streets.

In a cross-cultural collaboration that's certain to boost New York's reputation as a melting pot, Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron and Indian-born, London-based sculptor Anish Kapoor have forged a design alliance that will result in a new residential tower.

Named for its location on the corner of Leonard and Church Streets in TriBeCa, 56 Leonard Street will be designed by Herzog & de Meuron and feature a permanent site-specific sculpture by Kapoor on the ground level. The Alexico Group, the developer behind the highly acclaimed 165 Charles Street by Richard Meier and The Mark by Jacques Grange, is shepherding the project.

Herzog & de Meuron's recent projects include the nearby 40 Bond Street residences by Ian Schrager, the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games in China and the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Turner Prize-winning Kapoor is also responsible for the soon-to-be unveiled New York memorial to the British victims of September 11.
