From a Rocking Stool to a Doghouse, Designers Reinvent the Carpet Sample

Winners were announced at NeoCon World's Trade Fair in Chicago.

by Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 7/2/2008

The Rocking Horse Stool by Vala Abolghasemy of Potomac, Maryland was the Judge's Choice award winner.

Manufacturers will send out more than 700,000 carpet samples this year -- and more often than not, they go straight to a landfill. What if, instead, they were reborn as innovative design products?

The GreenScreen by Evan Gant of Boston was one of two People's Choice award winners.

The results are in for the 2008 Ample Sample design contest, which challenges designers to repurpose carpet samples. Finalists for the contest, sponsored by carpet manufacturer Bentley Prince Street, Floor Focus magazine and sustainable carpet sample firm Tricycle, were announced June 11 at furnishings tradeshow NeoCon World's Trade Fair 2008 in Chicago.

Ten finalists were named this year, and products ranged from a rocking stool, to a doghouse, to a pair of shoes. Blueprints and instructions for each product are available for download, free of charge.
