Like many pieces of great sculpture, the Ab Ovo dining chair draws its inspiration from anatomy. The legs have a certain animalistic quality—the feet seem moments away from transforming into ball and claws. The back, meanwhile, recalls the silhouette of a woman. No matter what the species, sensuous curves speak of animal magnetism. The item is the long-awaited final piece of the Ab Ovo collection, whose production has been limited to only 500 objects. Hand-carved from solid black walnut by a master craftsman in Los Angeles, each piece is signed by the artist. Matthias Pliessnig explored the possibilities of steam-bent oak and developed a small thicket of intriguing benches and chairs.
