Le Studio Anthost
Astrid de Saint Anthost's studio creates hand-painted fashion fabrics for the likes of John Galliano at Dior and Christian Lacroix. For one version of Anthost's and Elizabeth Polish's 23-inch-diameter Alberi cast-iron chandeliers, the studio hand-paints bare branches in white onto concentric tubes stitched from panels of vinyl that resist heat from the incandescent bulb. Alternate versions paint the design onto organza bonded to the vinyl, in custom colors. 718-267-8907; elizabethpolishdesign.com. circle 675
Something From Nothing
Mother Nature clearly supplied some encouragement, but human ingenuity provided the know-how. An advanced 3-D laser printer generates the lightweight honeycomb for Mark Irlam's Waspnest floor lamp. His just-in-time digital process permits extremely short lead times for reprinting the plastic shade. 44-7979-854-324; something-from-nothing.co.uk. circle 676
Besa Lighting
Nico 4 and Tamburo 4 mini pendants showcase sleek coaxial power cables and 35-watt halogen or xenon bi-pin-base bulbs. The shimmering, distressed-foil appliqués on the inside of the textured glass are a North American exclusive for this distributor. Hundreds of interchangeable glass shades are offered. 866-917-8760; besalighting.com. circle 680
Visual Comfort
Clodagh's Primitive sconce blends the soft glow of frosted glass with the shadow of brushed steel. Slightly more than twice as tall as its 5-inch width, the fixture extends from the wall less than 4 inches. A dark patina finish is also available. 713-686-5999; visualcomfort.com. circle 677
Bone Simple Design
Practically everything from Chad Jacobs is made to order. So his incandescent Halo Vertical Box pendant has a 24-inch-tall steel framework that can be blackened or otherwise customized in satin or polished nickel, antique or satin brass, or pewter. Choose your own palette for the linen shade. 212-627-0876; bonesimple.com. circle 679
Tiella
The Strata pendant approximates a teardrop using glass that's emblazoned with a flowing accent band. Available color combinations include frost with latte, latte with amber, or latte with brown. Pyrex lenses shield the low-voltage halogen bi-pin–base lamps within. The metal hardware can be bronze or satin nickel. 847-410-4400; tiella.com. circle 678
Plug Lighting
Helen Gifford binds an abundance of delicate, pointy lightbulbs to her stainless armature to create Upstream, a pendant inspired by sea urchins. In addition to the lamp's non-electrified bulbs, Gifford has included six sockets rated for use with standard 40- or 60-watt incandescents. 323-653-5635; pluglighting.com. circle 681
Site Specific Design
Azores-born designer Rui Docouto's current Childhood Memories collection recalls creatures from the deep. The 9-inch-high Black Pill table lamp has five legs individually formed from /-inch rods. The steel is available with a gunmetal patina, but custom lacquer colors are also options. 718-486-6341; sitespecificdesign.com. circle 682
Boyd Lighting
Doyle Crosby's Twilight pendants in brass or nickel negotiate the thin line between the simple geometry of their outlines and a rather divine chaos framed within. The fixtures may be used in wet locations and take F10 bulbs. Or, select high-intensity discharge bulbs for exterior applications. 415-778-4300; boydlighting.com. circle 685
Kevin Patrick McCarthy Light & Shade
To achieve the quality of light that this designer describes as "molten"—and to conceal the light bulb—McCarthy's Torres chandelier has a powder-coated metal framework smothered with hollow ornaments in three sizes. Ready-made spheres of matte white, gold, red, or silver make every day festive. 917-532-5606; kevinpatrickmccarthy.com. circle 683
Axo Light
Manuel Vivian's LT Slight G table lamp revives mid-century Pop as a cheerful cartoon in polished steel and aluminum, at heights of 17, 20, or 35 inches. The vanilla or red fabric shade delineates a narrow oval, while the steel plate for the lamp is flatter than a pancake, making it practically disappear when rotated. 39-041-538-2596; axolight.it. circle 684
Charles Loomis
Patois Frizzante has evolved this company's classic pendant. The diameter is available in sizes from 24 to 84 inches, or custom. Panels of bubbly glass shade the ring of 40-watt G16½ lamps within. Or you can choose onyx- or alabaster-colored panels, transporting the fixtures into warm and traditional territory. 800-755-0471; charlesloomis.com. circle 689
Hampstead Lighting
Turn over a new leaf with this fresh Nervure sconce. The enlarged, abstracted veining on the square, 10-inch lens is a silkscreen in green, red, or white. Perfect for tight spaces, the fixture's chrome frame projects less than five inches from the wall. 770-447-1700; hampsteadlighting.com. circle 688
Whyr'hymer Furniture
The seed was planted for Brandon Morrison's naturally-finished eucalyptus Wood Series No. 3 when he saw a Frank Lloyd Wright documentary. Fittingly, customers who order may choose to appear in a web documentary. Substitutes for the birds-eye maple shade include zebrawood veneer, linen, shoji, and rice paper. The bulb is a standard 100-watt incandescent. 310-567-1026; whyrhymer.com. circle 686
Phosphoria Design
Noah Prince's 19-inch-tall Critter lamp has a baroque silhouette carved in mahogany or reclaimed poplar, and finished with water-based polyurethane or old-fashioned hard wax. The shade consists of several veneer layers laminated into a nascent plywood. Various light sources are available. 646-258-1943; phosphoria.com. circle 687
Ralph Pucci
The redoubtable David Weeks introduces Sarus, an asymmetrical, large-scale sconce with the poise of graceful Indonesian cranes. Attached to shiny nickel arms, a pair of 60-watt bulbs have aluminum shades of 17/ and 23/ inches. Powder coating for the shades is available in off-white, black, orange, or chocolate. 212-633-0452; ralphpucci.net. circle 690
Studio Italia Design
This Venetian company brings us the Murano glass Blow. This striking, low-voltage chrome task lamp is miraculously encapsulated within a clear crystal bubble. The magnetic handle outside the bubble permits the lamp to be aimed. 305-621-9602; sid-usa.com. circle 694
SPI Lighting
Stile fixtures only look European; they're actually homegrown right here on U.S. soil. These aluminum fittings for walls or ceilings—indoors or out—take a T5 or T5HO fluorescent tube, in lengths from 34 to 72 inches. The mounts come painted in any color and hold the tubes away from the mounting-surface at distances ranging from 3 to 18 inches. 262-242-1420; spilighting.com. circle 691
Leucos
Thomas Sandell's elemental Flaska fixture starts with a mysterious elongated bottle that's nearly 28 inches tall, in smoked-white or smoked-black glass. A brushed nickel mount secures the enclosed glowing form in red or clear crystal and holds an ordinary 100-watt incandescent. 732-225-0010; leucos.com. circle 693
Gandia Blasco
On nights when the moon is perhaps a little lackluster, spark the gloom with this glowing tower from prolific Spanish modernist/manufacturer José Gandia. Designed for use outdoors, the roto-molded polyethylene of the 58-inch-tall Cubos floor lamp really stacks up. 212-421-6701; gandiablasco.com. circle 692
Ardee Lighting
Recessed Hover CF ceiling fixtures utilize industrial-grade thermoplastic, heavy-galvanized steel, and high-grade aluminum. The polished reflector ensures maximum distribution of light from 13- to 42-watt compact fluorescent tubes. The electronic ballast with optional dimming has battery backup for emergencies. 704-482-2811; ardeelighting.com. circle 699
Hinson & Company
Designer Josep Aregall of Barcelona-based Metalarte offers Tirana floor lamps in beige cotton knit that's been stretched across internally-lit metal frames. One version stands straight and tall at more than six feet from bottom to top; the other design is frozen into a curve. 718-482-1100; hinsonlighting.com. circle 695
LAM Lighting
The 18-gauge, cold-rolled spun steel of Solana pendants has a textured-white, baked-enamel finish. Choose rotatable, uplight/downlight combinations, and a lamp with a range of biaxial or compact fluorescents. Rigid stems come in a variety of lengths; aircraft-cable mounts are also sold. 800-732-5213; lamlighting.com. circle 698
Lorin Marsh
Glase floor lamps are Murano glass in a choice of clear, or six jewel tones. The floor lamp measures 64 inches to the finial, while the coordinating table lamp is 2 feet tall. A classic example of Marsh's style, this lamp uses a round, two-in-one shade that incorporates an outer layer of translucent fabric. Custom colors are possible for bulk orders. 212-759-8700; lorinmarsh.com. circle 696
Stray Dog Designs
Jane Gray's tabletop Artichoke is Haitian-made papier-mâché—created mostly from reused cement bags and highlighted by a white-painted paper shade. Beyond the original white finish, just-introduced Bahamian-Sea Blue is one of a dozen low-voc colors available for lamps, mirrors, tables, stools, wastebaskets, even trophy heads, in the line. 866-478-7297; straydogdesigns.com. circle 697
Aqua Creations
When she's good, she's very good. The Mod Collection's Mae West composition is from Israel-based Ayala Serfaty. The fixture—which displays Serfaty's signature hand-dyed and treated crushed silk, secured over a metal framework—modulates and softens light from eco-friendly, 36-watt fluorescent bulbs. 212-219-9922; aquagallery.com. circle 700
Terzani
Bruno Rainaldi's GRA pendant pays homage to the Autostrada ring road encircling Rome. Also recalling traditional handcrafts, the 600 small rings are welded into a lacy 3-foot-diameter cage—or a 20-inch ovoid version, which uses 234 rings. A sparkling central 100-watt halogen bulb highlights a nickel, silver, or gold finish. 888-837-9264; terzani.com. circle 704
CP Lighting
A tree grows in Wisconsin. Principal Christopher Poehlmann is branching out with one-of-a-kind fixtures that use candelabra-base bulbs (flame-tips are just one example). Each unique, surface-mount New Growth bronze chandelier is fabricated from salvaged aluminum, to which Poehlmann applies paint or a dark patina finish. 866-597-4800; cplighting.com. circle 701
Flos
The chrome-plated steel of Rodolfo Dordoni's 26-inch-tall Ray table lamps reminds us of lighthouses and power pylons. The line includes two floor lamps and a pendant—all available in halogen or fluorescent—with options for the shade that include blown glass in gray or spun aluminum that's been painted white or black. 800-939-3567; flos.com. circle 703
J Schatz
The made-to-order Multicolor Pyramid table lamp smothers its tapering 31-inch-tall earthenware base in layer upon layer of drips in a rainbow of thirteen brilliant glazes. The pedestal weighs close to five pounds each, and no two are glazed exactly alike. 866-344-5267; jschatz.com. circle 702
JGoodDesign
Jeffrey Goodman's Lily Pad chandelier spins molten-glass spheres into flat plates that include light-refracting rings. Glass colors include Caribbean blue, white, gray, steel blue, amber, olive gray, green-gray, red, bronze, champagne, and dark purple. Jesco Lighting
Designer Orfeo Quagliata consulted on the Orfeo collection's hand-colored glass Belle pendant with aluminum fittings in satin nickel or chrome. Catellani & Smith
The free-form Luna nel Pozzo is a tumbleweed of twined aluminum wire illuminated from within by low-voltage halogens. The fixtures can rest comfortably on the floor or hang as pendants. Choose between diameters of 2 or 4 feet. 39-035-656-088; catellanismith.com. circle 708
Zumtobel Lighting
Suitable for ceilings in damp locations, the recessed 2light can be fitted with fluorescents or metal halides. The square frame encloses a round, lamp-holding reflector that swings down for easy access. The brilliant corona from the reflector is visible only from certain angles. A retrofit is available for installations in existing gypsum board ceilings. 800-448-4131; zumtobel.us. circle 706
B.Lux
This manufacturer's snappy RCA Programme sports a look that echoes vintage radio paraphernalia. Both the polished aluminum ring and anodized aluminum shade reference old-fashioned microphones from the golden age of radio, while a clever little bracket takes the fixture from tabletop to wall-mount. 34-902-10-77-35; grupoblux.com. circle 707
