Q: Redesign
Tell us what you’d redesign by posting a comment using our TalkBack feature
-- Interior Design, 3/1/2008
In honor of the March redesign issue of Interior Design, and to launch our new monthly Q feature, we asked seven designers to tell us what they would redesign, if given the chance. Here are five subjects that came quickly to the surface:
1. The Dollar Bill
“Let’s keep the portrait of George for old times’ sake. But on the other side, just give Saul Bass or Jonathan Ive or me a call.” – Nick Luzietti, design principal at VOA Associates
2. NYC Subway
“The high entrance/exit turnstiles. Make them bigger, lose the curve, change the gear ratio, smaller diameter bars, or better yet, wood.” – Ross Anderson, president of Anderson Architects
“Everything about it. Use carbon fiber and other lightweight materials. Harness power generated by trains to power the system itself.” – Robin Elmslie Osler, principal of EOA
3. Hearth
“We always bump up against reconciling placement of the fireplace with the television. We need a well-designed hybrid that conflates these two elements.” – Joel Sanders, principal of Joel Sanders Architect
4. Cars
“The new Mustang convertible drives like a tank. It’s not a sexy car. I’d tighten up the lines, make her much smaller, and feed her with hydrogen fuel cells.” – textile designer Suzanne Tick
“Automobiles epitomized industrial democracy, but I’d love to design a replacement for gas-guzzling SUVs – Harry Allen, president of Harry Allen & Associates
5. Environmental Policies
“It’s time we mandate them, nationally and globally.” – Jeffrey Bernett, founder of CDS
