Call for Entries: AIA/UK's 2008 Excellence in Design Awards

The awards will be presented on Thursday, May 8, at the East Wintergarden on London's Canary Wharf.

If you thought the American Institute of Architect’s proclivity for prizes stops at the U.S. borders, think again: The AIA’s United Kingdom chapter is calling for submissions to its 2008 Excellence in Design Awards.

Designs by Britain-based architects, as well as completed works in the U.K. by international architects, are eligible for consideration. Project entries are due by 5pm on Wednesday, April 16, while winners will be lauded in a Thursday, May 8 presentation at the East Wintergarden on London's Canary Wharf.

New to this year's program is the Noel Hill Student Travel Awards program, which will recognize students currently enrolled in U.K. universities. In addition to presenting a portfolio, students must also submit a proposal for a study/travel experience abroad.

Past winners of the trans-Atlantic awards, some of whom sit on this year’s jury panel, represent a broad mix from the architectural community, including DeRijke Marsh Morgan, Foster & Partners, Gianni Botsford Architects, Zaha Hadid Architects, Will Alsop, and Panter Hudspith

The AIA/UK was founded in 1990 by a group of American architects living and working in the United Kingdom. By 1992 it officially became the first international chapter of the 150-year old, 78,000-member organization, and has led the way for the formal recognition of other international chapters in Europe and Asia. Boasting 200 members, it is appropriately located in Benjamin Franklin's former residence in London.

From top: Zaha Hadid Architects won an AIA/UK Excellence in Design Award last year for the Maggie's Centre cancer treatment facility in Fife, Scotland. Panter Hudspith won for the Collection museum in Lincoln, England.
