Catch these events in March and April

Edited by Meghan Edwards -- Interior Design, 2/1/2008

1. "Thomas Nozkowski," his first solo exhibition at heavy-hitting PaceWildenstein in New York, represents something of a coronation for an artist whose acclaim has grown exponentially since his solo debut in 1979. Nozkowski is known for eschewing the grandiose, as evident from the show's three dozen paintings. The size of Untitled (8-88), an oil on linen, is equally unassuming: only 22 by 28 inches. April 4–May 3; 212-929-7000; pacewildenstein.com.

2. For "Chado Ralph Rucci," the Phoenix Art Museum has assembled 25 ensembles, each one standing for a year of Ralph Rucci's career in fashion. From fall 2003, this top in embroidered silk jersey and skirt in silk organza and horsehair exhibit his exquisite hand-sewed detail and innovative cuts. After all, the Chado in the label's name refers to the Japanese tea ceremony, which demands nothing less than perfection. March21–August 17; 602-257-1222; phxart.org.

3. Part of "Phantom Sightings: Art After the Chicano Movement" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Juan Capistran's Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Truth? references several versions of American patriotism. They include Jasper Johns's Flag from 1955, posters for the '80's punk band the Minutemen, and further riffs on the minuteman moniker in general. April 6–September 1; 323-857-6000; lacma.org.

4. Interior Design Hall of Fame member Margo Grant Walsh possesses an astonishing trove of antique and vintage metalwork from 17 different countries, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, has selected 50 pieces for "Designed by Architects: Metalwork From the Margo Grant Walsh Collection." Charles Robert Ashbee, in the vanguard of the English arts and crafts movement, designed these 1900 salt and pepper casters in silver studded with ovals of amethyst and quartz. March 15–August 3; 713-639-7300; mfah.org.

5. There's a thin line between love and hate—one walked by the jagged wooden and acrylic letters of Desire Despair. The work is appearing in "Jack Pierson," a survey at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin. Comprising about 35 of the American artist's sculptures, installations, photographs, and drawings, the show spans the 1990's to the present. March 12–May 18; 353-1-612-9900; modernart.ie.
