Catch these events in February and March

Edited by Meghan Edwards -- Interior Design, 1/1/2008

1. It's not all about Philip Johnson in "Painting the Glass House: Artists Revisit Modern Architecture," appearing jointly at the Yale School of Architecture Gallery in New Haven and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Die Gartenterrasse (Garden Terrace), a C-print by Christine Erhard on view at the Aldrich, is both a nostalgic evocation and a preservationist call to arms. February 11–May 9; 203-432-2288; architecture.yale.edu. March 9–July 27; 203-438-4519; aldrichart.org.

2. Riding the wave of recent exhibitions on collecting practices, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., assembles 100 paintings, sculptures, photographs, and works on paper in "Degas to Diebenkorn: The Phillips Collects." Elizabeth Murray painted the The Sun and the Moon, an oil on panel, in 2004; it was donated to the museum three years later. February 9–May 25; 202-387-2151; phillipscollection.org.

3. Seattle's Henry Art Gallery is giving a French-Algerian artist his first large-scale one-man show in the U.S. The sculptures and videos in "Kader Attia: New Works," produced by him during a month long residency, should evince his interest in the psychological effects of architectural scale—as seen in his 2005 installation Childhood. February 29–May 25; 206-543-2280; henryart.org.

4. Arizona's Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is gearing up for "Car Culture," which includes Erwin Wurm's Fat Car in Styrofoam and polyester. On March 13, a talk by former General Motors Corporation designer Paul Wachowski will bring his insider's perspective to the impact of the automobile on the rest of the visual world. Through April 27; 480-874-4666; smoca.org.

5. "Tabaimo," the eponymous solo exhibition of video installations by an artist who won acclaim at the 2007 "Biennale di Venezia," features the woodblock-style three-channel animations of Public ConVENience. The work's title emphasizes ven, Japanese for public, in transforming part of New York's James Cohan Gallery into a vast public restroom. March 14–April 12; 212-714-9500; jamescohan.com.
