Designers in Residence Transform London's Design Museum

Chris O'Shea's installation allows visitors to see exclusive areas of the museum.

by Ayesha J. Gallion -- Interior Design, 8/20/2007

London's Design Museum has tapped five young professionals to transform its interiors as part of a new annual exhibition, "Designers in Residence," on view September 12-October 14. Participants are Sarah van Gameron, Chris O'Shea, Tomas Alonso, Richard Sweeney, and Finn Magee.

"We have opened the museum to five talented young designers and we are thrilled with the energy and imagination they have brought us," says design museum director Deyan Sudjic.

Projects are diverse and range from mechanical to ecological displays. Gameron's Big Dipper, a mechanical creation of 24 candle wax chandeliers, will be installed in Riverside Hall. O'Shea will create an interactive exhibit allowing visitors to see exclusive areas of the museum. Alonso aims to transform the museum cafe with his modular plant system, Home Greenroom. Sweeney will explore handmade and manufactured materials to create paper forms of illumination and Magee will recreate a designer's studio.

"This is a showcase that will celebrate the potential range of very different designers at the start of their careers," notes Sudjic.
