The Ace Hotel Portland aspires to be neither boutique nor old-world. Rather, the 79-room Oregon property regards itself as a comfortable—and affordable—home away from home for the bohemian crowd. Four entrepreneurial partners restored many of the 1912 building's architectural details; sourced materials and furnishings locally; and commissioned murals from Portland artists. It's not uncommon for museums to exhibit work in nontraditional mediums. Philadelphia's Fabric Workshop and Museum, however, takes that idea a few steps further—objects such as Tristan Lowe's vinyl Dumbo dominate the physical space. These chairs may be small on size—some measuring only 3 inches high—but all are big on design. More than 350 pieces owned by Material ConneXion founder George Beylerian are on view at New York's Museum of Arts & Design in "Have a Seat! The Jerde Partnership has designed a 2.75 million-square-foot mixed-use, state-of-the-art Warsaw project that puts U.S. malls to shame. Golden Terraces features an organically shaped glass roof that spans almost 400 feet and, of course, terraces that overlook the retail and entertainment spaces.
