New Art Haven

Jen Renzi -- Interior Design, 12/1/2000

Yale University has announced a ten-year, $250 million campaign to renovate and upgrade its art and architecture facilities, establishing a "vital, integrated arts community" for the campus and the city of New Haven. The ambitious plan will add 275,000 sq. ft. and will encourage greater collaboration between disciplines. The lynchpin is a restoration of the Paul Rudolph-designed Art & Architecture building to its original 1963 configuration and glory. A new 70,000-sq.-ft. building will be constructed next door to house the History of Art department and a digital media center for the arts, and to accommodate the ground floor expansion of the Art Library. Nearby, the Yale University Art Gallery-designed by Louis Kahn in 1954-will reclaim two adjacent structures, providing additional exhibition, resource, and storage space for its permanent collection.
