The queen of chairs

Paolo Rizzatto's impish Regina for Poltrona Frau updates the Victorian reading chair. This new spin on a bookish classic features a four-prong swivel base, a reclining mechanism, and aluminum-ringed holes in lieu of yesteryear's button tufting. Back and base are gray epoxy powder-painted metal; 90 colors of leather are offered. 145 Wooster Street, New York, NY 10012; 212-777-7592; poltronafrau.com. circle 312

Essential reading

Book smarts and smart design go hand in hand, thanks to the Robert A.M. Stern Library. To address the lack of stylish offerings for large institutions and small reading rooms alike, Stern partnered with three manufacturers to create this comprehensive collection, which exhibits his signature classic forms. stripped of superfluous detailing.

Stern's collaboration with Bentley Prince Street resulted in four timeless, graphic carpets. Reynolds and Forsyth are both large-scale grids; Telfair is a mid-scale square; the small-scale check is Ellis.

The architect's Athenaeum and Bibliotheque lines for David Edward update traditional furniture with modern wire-management capabilities. The study carrels, end panels, tables, and chairs all come in rift-cut oak in two stains, plus natural or ebonized walnut.

For Baldinger Architectural Lighting, Stern designed 10 brass fixtures named after New York Public Library branches. Check out the Hudson ring pendant, the Seward table lamp with urn-shape base, the Riverside torch sconce, and the Americans With Disabilities Act–compliant Hamilton sconce. Paired with frosted-glass shades, pieces come in four finishes.

With so many page-turning offerings, Library is guaranteed to rocket to the top of the best-seller list. She's the one

Since 1998, Dune has been at the forefront of contemporary design, tapping emerging talents to create products that start conversations. This time, president and founder Richard Shemtov embraces established names, too—and a gender bias. Previewed at the opening-night party for New York's International Contemporary Furniture Fair, the Wonder Women collection showcases 12 international, intergenerational female architects and designers.

Eva Zeisel sets the tone with her feminine and lyrical Raindrop tables in colorful cast resin. Laurinda Spear's molded-fiberglass Hollow bed is bit more pensive, exploring the concept of emptiness. Like a plant sprouting from a flowerpot, Monica Nicoletti's whimsical Tree of Everyday Life coat and umbrella stand captures quotidian domestic sweetness. And Yeon Soo Son mixed metallic vinyls for her chubby ottoman, Gooroom. (It means cloud in Korean.)

Other highlights include Matali Crasset's translucent-resin Chiara chair; Laurene Leon-Boym's shag rugs, which honor the Bic pen; and Victoria Meyers's striking bleached-hardwood waterfall table, with a sexy fringe of ball-and-chain drops that recall a flapper's dress. Pieces by Winka Dubbeldam, Sarah Fels, Emanuela Frattini Magnusson, Ana Mir, and Camila Vega round out the collection. 88 Franklin Street, New York, NY 10013; 212-925-6171; dune-ny.com. circle 316

Practical magic

In the course of his 35-year career, Dakota Jackson has put a sophisticated spin on American furniture. And his new collection—his largest to date—continues to celebrate elegant materials, flawless forms, and precise detailing.

The 19 pieces exhibit Jackson's unmistakable tapered silhouettes, juxtaposition of materials, and play of volumes. Case in point: the Rewind cocktail table—its English sycamore base plays a game of hide-and-seek, spinning to reveal or conceal storage compartments. Other high notes include the suave 1930's-inspired Tofu chair, with a rotating chrome-plated steel base; the J-1 Cabriolet executive writing table in ribbon-striped mahogany; the timeless solid-cherry Double Back side chair; and the lightweight Scatter chair with a tubular-steel base.
