Pie in the sky

The prototype for Liuhta Architecture & Design's new pendant was an irregular circle of pie-shape plastic petals. The current incarnation, LT_ 02 Segment, is a single groovy slab of polished acrylic scored with a sunburst of kerfs. Light from 15 diodes, hidden at the center of the disk, radiates along the grooves to produce a watery glow that's just enough for nightclubs, bars, restaurants, or living rooms "where you want to set a mood," says Olaf Schüler, one of Liuhta's four designers.

After showing at the recent Designersblock exhibition in London, the firm has been approached by both British and Italian manufacturers. But don't expect a drop in price if the pendant goes mass-market. "It's not an everyday design," Schüler explains, noting the precisely detailed stainless-steel stem and thumbscrew. Materialise
