Scenic Route

edited by Sheila Kim -- Interior Design, 6/1/2003

Thanks to the efforts of Chelsea art dealers and the election of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York's High Line is safe from demolition. Now it's just a matter of figuring out what to do with the mile-long elevated 1930s train track, which runs up the West Side—past all those contemporary galleries. Friends of the High Line, a nonprofit dedicated to the relic's preservation and reuse, has organized a redesign competition to visualize the viaduct's next life. Suggestions so far: a hovering park and a series of cafés. Winning entries go on view at another railway landmark, Grand Central Terminal. July 10-26; 212-606-3720; thehighline.org.
