New York, New York

Staff -- Interior Design, 2/1/2002

Two extraordinary tributes to New York City open there this month as a response to the attacks of September 11. "Life of the City" at the Museum of Modern Art presents 150 photos that celebrate and capture the vitality, grit, and beauty of Manhattan. Images by Weegee, Irving Penn, and Alfred Stieglitz will hang alongside informally mounted photos contributed by New Yorkers and visitors, plus digital displays of additional photographs compiled after September 11. February 28–May 21; 212-708-9400; www.moma.org. Meanwhile the Skyscraper Museum, displaced from its downtown building by the terrorist attack, presents "WTC: Monument" at the New-York Historical Society. The first section of this exhibition examines the history and construction of the complex through the Port Authority's 18-minute film Building the World Trade Center, vintage photographs of lower Manhattan from the Thomas Airviews collection, and the original World Trade Center presentation model from the office of architect Minoru Yamasaki. The show's second section displays images of the complex from the time of the jet attacks and their immediate aftermath. Through May 5; 212-873-3400; www.nyhistory.org.
