In the Fold

Origamic Architecture, at the American Craft Museum through September 2nd, is the first major U.S. installation of origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. Flowers, animals, and abstract designs join recreations of such important architectural works as Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, the Cathedral of Notre Dame, New York's Chrysler Building, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The more than 100 works on view by leading practitioners of the art, including Tokyo architect Masahiro Chatani, Keiko Nakazawa (Disney Castle, left), and Takaaki Kihara (Sydney Opera House, below), integrate traditional origami with cut-paper and pop-up paper engineering principles.
