Pattern Recongition

Rebecca Thienes -- Interior Design, 10/1/2012 3:28:00 PM

When does an object transcend basic form and simple function? When it engages—and charms—the user. Motif, by Omvivo principal designer Thomas Coward, begins with a round glass bottom that is hand-etched in one of three patterns— Forest, Kaleidoscope, orPebble—formed in a kiln, and then fused with a band of white solid surfacing.

At 20 inches in diameter and 3 inches deep, the basin, thanks to a chrome spacer, floats approximately an inch above its coordinating white vanity. When light and water are involved, shadows of the pattern appear on the top of the vanity. The latter features hand-turned wooden legs and a partitioned drawer.
