On the Horizon for K&B: Studium

Moisture, of course, is an enemy to most art. But cover photography with waterproof resin and suddenly kitchens and bathrooms are ideal venues to showcase decorative works. "Aluminum art panels are a totally new concept," says Studium's David Meitus, naming countless previously off-limits rooms as possible places for this gorgeous tile-substitute.

Designed by Milan-based art director Alex Turco, the durable yet thin (5mm) panels are manufactured on sheets of aluminum measuring up to 10 by 5 feet in size. Meitus likens the process to Turco's canvas creations: layers of photos, acrylic paints, pigments, resin, metallics, and more under several layers of waterproof resin - namely polyethylene, a synthetic thermoplastic.

The idea emerged from Turco's art practice. He's always offered custom fine art pieces using client-provided photographs or images. Now clients can use a Turco image, or their own, for these waterproof panels. "I love the idea of introducing my art in unlikely spaces," says Turco. "Our aluminum art panels bring one-of-a-kind commissions to the kitchen and bath. They are as durable as any tiled surface but allow designers so much more room and creativity to express themselves."
