25 New York Design Hot Spots: #17-20 Museums

Deborah Wilk -- Interior Design, 9/1/2012 6:28:00 PM

Temple of Dendur17. Temple of Dendur
Designer: Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates
Location: Sackler Wing, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 5th Avenue, Manhattan

"I relish the circuitous path from Stanford White's great rotunda entry through the dimly lit hieroglyphs and sarcophagi opening onto the soaring space. . .The room defines a great moment of architecture through its simultaneity: an interior that is exterior, a circulator that compels rest, a singular volume that is a connector to other places and paths. It's a space that celebrates architecture, light, interior, landscape, and art. Did I mention the temple is great too?"

-David Nosanchuk, principal, Nosanchuk

Folk Art Museum

18. American Folk Art Museum
Designer: Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects
Location: 2 Lincoln Square, 60 West 66th Street, Manhattan

"The façade's cast metal is both sophisticated and rustic at the same time, sort of like the best pieces in the museum. The inside of the building is beautifully designed and detailed-another gem."

-Robert Krone, principal, KroneArc

James Turrell

19. Meeting
Arist: James Turrell
Location: Museum of Modern Art, PS 1, 22-25 Jackson Avenue, Queens

Turrell's site-specific skyspaces, a series of rectangular or round apertures cut into a ceiling to expose the sky, never fail to inspire. In this New York edition, the interior walls are lit to create an orange glow on the white-painted walls.

-Belen Moneo, principal, Moneo Brock Studio

Guggenheim Museum

20. Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Designers: Frank Lloyd Wright, William Wesley Peters, Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects (annex)
Location: 1071 5th Avenue, Manhattan

"I am inspired each time I look down from the top of the ramp at the Guggenheim. The people visible on the first floor look like they are experiencing life just one moment into the past. It's New York's version of the view from the Dome in St. Peter's, and it never fails to create a state of awe in me. Flabbergasting in a good way."

-Pamela Katch, principal, Katch I.D.
