Little Luminaries

Rebecca Thienes and Arlene Hirst -- Interior Design, 8/1/2012 2:00:00 AM

little luminaries

Inspired by everything from comic books and sci-fi movies to Jean Prouv. and Memphis, UM Project’sCraft System is a magical mash-up of robotlike creatures that, almost coincidentally, provide light of the incandescent or LED variety. UM, which stands for users and makers as well as representing the initials of founder Fran.ois Chambard’s two children, Una and Milan, is dedicated to marrying industry and craft. And that’s a mission clearly accomplished with this collection. Standardized bases, in Corian, supply the industrial part of the equation; craft emanates from the handmade attachments.

The lamps are one-offs with the exception of market-ready Atum. Choose black, white, or gray Corian for the base. For the shade, option one is spandex mesh, offered in black or gray, and option two is satin brass on the inside and a white or black powder coat on the outside. The Atum table lamp stands 14 inches high. A floor lamp is also available.  umproject.com.
