"We wanted to create a sensation of living in a country house but six floors higher. We believe that an apartment shouldn't lack exterior spaces," says Palacios. By design, the main space in each apartment is the exterior area: the terrace and a cantilever pool that jets out into the sky from the side of the building.
Cookie-cutter
walls are the furthest things from the mind here, and swimming in the air is a
sensation most of us have not yet experienced. "The idea of the pools was not
only about the impact that it could create in the form, or the movement that it
gives to the façade," says Palacios, "But also the idea of having a sense of
individuality in each apartment."
It
remains to be seen if neighbors will mind water spilling over the sides. But
does that really happen? Not according to the Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong
Kangqiao, which opened March 2011 with a 30-meter long cantilever pool on the
24th floor, suspended over the side of the hotel, but built as an indoor pool.
The hotel says people are booking rooms just to check out the pool, open only
to guests. Go back to main article
