In the Crystal Bakehouse series by Fine Art Lamps, Mark McDowell retains texture below smooth surfaces by baking crystals into a solid block, then backlighting it with fluorescent lamping.

Reclaimed tires turn into Tyre, a cocktail table from Studio A with an opening in the bottom that allows the base to be loaded with sand (or perhaps unwanted clutter) for added stability.
