Trained as an architect, David Nosanchuk typically thinks in three dimensions. And he continued to do so in his first rug collection, Bas Relief for Stark. Unquestionably a texture story, it's also about natural and historical references. Astrum's starbursts explode in cut pile against a looped-pile field. The interconnected cut-pile circles and right angles that embellish the broad-looped field of Quadratus and the cut-pile lines that rise from the field of Orbis were modeled after a Louis Sullivan tapestry woven for the Chicago Stock Exchange. As for Heims, its Sullivan-esque cellular structure derives from a drawing that Nosanchuk did for a residential project. The eight patterns can be hand-knotted in Tibet or hand-tufted elsewhere in China, using wool, silk, or a mixture thereof. Rugs are made to order at any size, in standard or custom colors. 212-752-9000; starkcarpet.com.
