Winner: Lord Leck & Sargent and Office DA
Project: Human Research Building
In 1939, before becoming the director of the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Architecture, Paul Heffernan built a laboratory building there. Its $9.5 million renovation by Lord Aeck & Sargent principal Jack Pyburn and Office dA founding principal Nader Tehrani yielded 35,800 square feet of graduate architecture studios, labs for computer science and interdisciplinary research, and offices. Better yet, those programming demands were satisfied while preserving Heffernan's industrial aesthetic. Pyburn and Tehrani left most of the hangarlike volume open as a drafting studio. At one end, offering access to the offices, is a new spiral staircase-wrapped in steel cable mesh for safety and welded and bolted to a ceiling truss for support. A straight staircase at the opposite end of the drafting studio rises to a mezzanine that Pyburn and Tehrani inserted, taking advantage of the 47-foot ceiling height. Receiving sunlight from existing clerestories, the mezzanine contains additional studio space, plus a student lounge.
